What causes Infected Insect Bites?

Insect bites can become infected when bacteria enter the skin through the bite site—especially if scratched or left untreated. While many bites heal on their own, some can become painful, swollen, and inflamed, requiring medical attention.

Our pharmacist will assess your symptoms to determine if the bite is infected and recommend appropriate treatment.

What are the main signs and symptoms?

You may be eligible for support if:

1. Are an adult, or suspect a child in your care over 1 year old has developed an infected insect bite
2. Were bitten more than 2 days ago
3. Notice the bite site is:

– Red
– Painful or tender to touch
– Swollen
– Warm or hot to the touch
– Turning red and the redness is spreading to the surrounding skin
– Weeping, or there’s puss coming from the affected area

This service is not suitable for individuals under 16 who are pregnant—they should consult their GP.
