What is the Emergency Contraceptive Pill (Morning After Pill)?

The morning-after pill, also known as the emergency contraceptive pill, can help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. It’s most effective when taken as soon as possible after intercourse. At Immingham Pharmacy, we offer a private morning-after pill service.

Our trained pharmacist will ask you to complete a short health questionnaire to ensure the treatment is right for you.

Can I take the Emergency Contraceptive Pill?

In most cases, the emergency contraceptive pill is safe for women to use—even those who can’t use hormonal contraception such as the combined pill or contraceptive patch. If you’re breastfeeding, you may need to pause after taking the pill.

The pill may not be suitable if you are taking steroid medication for asthma or if you are significantly overweight.

Common side effects of the Emergency Contraceptive Pill

The emergency contraceptive pill is generally very safe. Serious side effects are rare, but some common side effects include:
Headache
Nausea
Period-like cramping or abdominal pain
