What is shingles?

Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful skin rash. It is triggered by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus—the same virus that causes chickenpox. After recovering from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in your body and may reactivate later in life due to factors like stress or a weakened immune system.

What are the main signs and symptoms?

We might be able to help if you:
1. Are an adult aged 18 or over

Are showing symptoms including:

1. A tingling or painful sensation on an area of your skin
2. Feeling generally unwell and experiencing headache
3. Developing a blotchy rash within a few days of the two previous symptoms (usually on the chest or tummy, but it can appear anywhere on the body, including the face, eyes, or genitals).

A blotchy rash that develops within a few days (commonly on the chest or abdomen, but can appear anywhere including the face, eyes, or genitals)

Shingles typically affects only one side of the body. If the rash appears on both sides, it may indicate a different condition—please consult your GP or call 111.
