What causes Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

A UTI occurs when bacteria enter the urinary tract, leading to infection. It’s a common condition—especially among women—and can affect the bladder, urethra, or kidneys. Early treatment can help prevent complications.

You may be eligible for support if:

You are female and aged between 18–64
You experience symptoms such as:
Needing to urinate more often than usual (especially at night)
Pain or a burning sensation when urinating
A sudden, urgent need to urinate
Cloudy-looking urine

When to See Your GP

Contact your GP if you notice:

Blood in your urine
Lower abdominal pain

Seek urgent or same-day medical attention if you experience:

Kidney pain (tenderness near your back, just below the ribs)
Nausea or vomiting
Flu-like symptoms
High fever

You should also speak to your GP if you:

Are pregnant
Use a catheter
Have recurring UTIs (2 in 6 months, or 3 in 12 months)
